Krista Krebs, 47, died Friday, June 26, 2009, of esophageal cancer. Krista was born Nov. 15, 1961, at Lawrence, Kan., moved to Santa Monica, Calif., in 1965 and to Pullman in 1970. Krista graduated from Pullman High School in 1979.

As the result of a 1981 car accident, Krista became a quadriplegic. She graduated from Washington State University at Pullman with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice and then attended the University of Puget Sound Law School at Tacoma until illness forced her to return to Pullman. Later she attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., where Krista received a paralegal degree.

Krista moved to Shelton, Conn., in 1998 with John Whitburn, her attendant and friend, where the two started a business buying rare books and selling them on the Internet. Krista was a voracious reader and book collector. In 2001, Krista moved from Connecticut to Oregon and lived in an apartment at Gresham, to be near her sister.

Krista spent many hours on her computer. She used the computer to conduct genealogical research, order medical supplies, conduct business, read books, listen to music, play computer games, communicate with friends and keep up with the latest news. She was a major user of the public libraries wherever she was living. She was also a member of the Oregon Historical Society.

Krista traveled extensively after becoming a quadriplegic. She was a devoted fan of Chicago blues music, and went to a number of blues concerts in Chicago, Boston and New Orleans. She kept a lot of mementoes from these trips, and enjoyed sharing them with her friends and family. She continued an active life in Oregon, attending the Waterfront Blues festival, Cinco De Mayo and Taste of the Nation, as well as going to many restaurants and museums.

Survivors include her parents, Ted and Lynne Krebs of Potlatch; sister, Marcia Checkis and Phil Reis of West Linn, Ore.; her brother, Luke Timothy Krebs and wife Lauren of Bass Harbor, Maine; nephews, Joshua and Jonathan Checkis, and Luke and Nicholas Krebs; niece, Krislyn Checkis; and many aunts and uncles.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at the Freeze Cemetery outside of Potlatch, officiated by her uncle John Grimsley, to celebrate her new life and body. A memorial service will take place at Woodville Baptist Church on Arata Road in Wood Village, Ore., officiated by her close friend, Chaplain Harold Fuller.
